INTEGRAL SKIN FOAM POLYURETHANE SYSTEMS

BayOne integral skin foam systems combine the advantage of a durable non-porous outer elastomeric skin with a low-density cellular core. The tough-yet-flexible outer skin provides excellent resistance to abrasion, cutting, puncture, and chemical attack, while the foam core makes finished parts weigh less so they are more cost-efficient than those made with a solid non-cellular material.

Markets Served

  • Recreational vehicles
  • Agricultural and industrial vehicles
  • Office furniture
  • Marine applications
  • Sports equipment
  • Material handling (dunnage)
  • Medical devices

Systems Available

  • HFC-245fa / Pentane-Blown: for parts requiring a thicker skin and a firm core
  • HFC-134a and Water Co-Blown: for parts requiring a soft, resilient hand
  • Water-Blown: for parts requiring uniform physical properties through the cross-section

Physical Property and Process Requirements

  • Hardness from 70 Shore OO to 85 Shore A
  • Free rise density from 5 pcf to 15 pcf
  • Molded density from 12 pcf to 30 pcf
  • Cream time from 15 seconds to 60 seconds
  • De-mold time as low as 5 minutes

Performance Considerations

  • Hardness versus density
  • In-mold coatings for color matching and light fastness/color stability
  • Hand or machine mixed
  • Injection point, mold venting and parting lines
  • Enhanced flow for complex parts or those having thin cross-sections
  • Need for high elongation or excellent cut-tear resistance
  • Ability to heat and maintain mold temperature from 105°F to 135°F
